We stay almost exclusively at churches, and they're almost always pretty at dawn.
The route started on semi wooded roads that alternated between asphalt and gravel.
Another shot of the same road. Really pretty riding.
Further along, the trees started to thin and we wandered into farmland.
No idea what was going on here, but with the road closed and the collapsing stop sign, it looks a little tragic.
Stopping in the shade. When it's 90 degrees out, there's nowhere else worth stopping.
Farmland at lunch. There aren't so many farms in the Appalachian chain.
We overnighted at this funky canoe outfitter. The whole town was pretty janky, so the outfitter was the nicest thing in town.
Who sets up a tent indoors? I mean, these guys.
Some of the smaller canoes at the outfitter. They custom build 33' boats for their trips.
We ran an evening bike clinic just before dinner. A bunch of lucky local kids showed up. They asked us questions about our bikes and we showed them how to fix theirs.
Dinnertime! The fellow in tie-dye in the foreground worked at the canoe place. Dinner was a potluck contributed by a bunch of local vendors.
Finally, a town hall meeting. These weekly meetings encourage us to reflect on the week and improve the weeks ahead.
We transitioned scenery today. The Appalachian mountains came to a gradual close and have been replaced by farmland. (It's also been a few days since anyone fed us grits and the southern accents have been getting stronger.)
Our evening host was a canoe outfitter that custom built 33' canoes and ran excursions down the Mississippi river.
